The 2017 Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital Amazing Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K have officially partnered with Varsity Sports to get our runners ready for the races on March 11 and 12, 2017.  Under the expert running programs of Jenni Peters, Varsity Sports owner and running group founder, the OLOL Children's Hospital Amazing runners will be led to run distances never completed before, at faster paces, and with a huge group of new found running friends!

Varsity Sports sets up a weekly training schedule on their calendar page (view it here) The weekday training groups occur of Monday, Wednesday, and Thursdays at 5:30pm and the locations change for variation.  The week's training runs are loaded at the beginning of each week and are specifically designed to assist the Varsity Runners in areas of opportunity and improvement in performance. The weekday runs are excellent for getting faster and working on paces. Saturday runs are "long run days" and these runs start at 7:30 am with locations changing weekly.  

Multiple workouts for the various levels of training (Half, 10K, and 5K or other VS groups) will nearly always start and finish in the same place, but the routes will vary. Links for the route maps are provided on the calendar on the Varsity Sports website or on the Varsity Sports app (it's quite handy!).  The Amazing Training groups are encouraged to use the weekday Varsity Sports training groups as well as the "long run Saturday" groups over the course of the weeks leading up to the Amazing Race Weekend (and beyond, just because they are great).  If schedules and location pose problems for weekday runs, use the workouts show to guide your solo runs.

The leaders for the Amazing Half Marathon training group will be Rebecca Tucker and Jeremy Theriot. The Amazing Half Marathon "Long Run Saturday" Schedule is below and is subject to change. It can be downloaded here.

BEGINNER HALF MARATHON SCHEDULE – Winter 2016/2017

December 17 – 3 miles
December 24 – 4 miles with tempo work
December 31 – 6 miles with variable pace “stuff”
January 7 - 6 miles with 3 Miles at goal pace
January 14 – 8 steady w/ last 5 miles cut downs, or 1.5 mile warmup for The Louisiana Quarter Marathon (6.5 miles)
January 21 – 10 miles including long ladder workout
January 28 – 11 Miles
February 4 - 6 with tempo/variable pace or Rock N Roll 10K (Feb 5, 2017)
February 11 – 8 miles easy running, Meb does his 90 seconds slower than race pace, or Mardi Gras Mambo 10K (6.2) or 15K (9.33)
February 18 – 9 miles with Yasso 880 workout
February 25 – 10 miles (at half marathon race pace)
March 4 – 6 miles
March 12 – OLOL Amazing Half Marathon

The Amazing Training groups for the 10K and 5K will kick-off on January 28 at 7:30 am. Please use the schedules below for training workouts. The "Long Run Saturday" Schedules for the 10K and 5K can be reviewed below or downloaded here: 10K or 5K.

We would encourage runners to join the Varsity Sports training groups whenever possible during 5K and 10K training, as many of those workouts can often be modified to shorter distances.
